My summer 2024 study abroad program in Bologna, Italy, provided invaluable opportunities for cultural immersion and the development of a global worldview. Studying at the University of Bologna, including a course on Italian women artists in history, offered a unique historical and cultural context, while working with Italian high school students honed my communication and intercultural skills. My time volunteering at a refugee center in Sicily was particularly impactful, fostering empathy and a deeper understanding of global migration patterns and the importance of advocating for social justice. This experience allowed me to:
Develop intercultural communication skills: Through interactions with Italian students and refugees from various backgrounds.
Gain a firsthand understanding of global migration: By listening to the personal stories of refugees in Sicily.
Strengthen my commitment to social justice: Through witnessing the challenges faced by displaced individuals.
Broaden my cultural awareness: Through traveling to over 30 cities and experiencing diverse regional cultures within Italy, and through the study of Italian women artists.
Deepen my understanding of art history: Through my coursework at the University of Bologna.
